ABOUT THE ATTIC THEATRE ENSEMBLE
The Attic Theatre Ensemble was founded in 1987 by James
Carey and Denise Ragan and has become one of Los Angeles' most important and prestigious
legitimate theater groups. Until it's recent move to its new home, the Attic Theatre
Centre was the oldest producing organization on Hollywood's Theatre Row. The Attic
Theatre Ensemble is committed to ensemble development, lifelong training of professionals,
and the representation of Los Angeles' diverse community through theatrical expression.
The ensemble is dedicated to provide a platform for the exploration of all peoples'
traditional ethnic and cultural heritage to help better understand and educate its members
and the community.
Statement of Purpose for the
Attic Theatre Ensemble
- The Attic Theatre Ensemble is a group of Theatre Artists
who are committed to ongoing training of the artist, experimentation as a way to grow and
further our careers - both artistically and financially.
- This group of artists understands the concept that
focusing on the work of the artist bears fruit both artistically and career wise - that
the two are linked completely and cannot be separated.
- We will meet weekly in a safe environment (workshop) that
encourages experimentation and failure for the purpose of artistic growth. This
environment is neither a class where a teacher can dictate what you do, how you do it, and
when you do something. It is not a performance where a director, writer, producer, and
cast expect and need you to perform in a certain way every night in a specific way. It is
your time and your space to explore!
- By meeting weekly, the artists develop a bond, knowledge
of the other artists and a common language that slows them to work together effectively.
- To commit to putting up work of any creative nature (as
actor, director, writer) in workshop once every 6 weeks.
- To provide further outlets for artistic growth and
challenge - we as a group will produce 3 plays during the coming calendar year. These
shows will feature members of the group as actors, directors, writers, producers and will
be crewed and technically supported by the other members.
- Our goals are the following:
- That the work of the plays and the continuing exploration
of work in workshop will provide continued growth not only for the group, but also the
individual.
- This growth will be rewarded both in artistic depth,
greater notice, and more financial reward for the artist.
